Exam Grade Calculation

Q. 22 Suppose a professor counts the final exam as being equal to each of the other tests in her course, and she will also change the lowest test score to match the final exam score if the final exam score is higher. If a student’s four test scores are 83, 67, 52, and 90, what is the lowest score the student can earn on the final exam and still obtain at least an 80 average for the course?

Sum of Scores including last score = 83 + 67 + x + 90 + x = 2x + 240

Equation will be

(2x + 240 ) / 5 = 80

2x + 240 = 400

2x = 400 – 240

2x = 160

X = 80

Student can earn a lowest score of 80 and to keep the average at 80.

Grade Calculation

Q. 21. To earn an A in a course, a student must get at least a 90 average on four tests and a final exam, with the final exam weighted twice that of any one test. If the four test scores are 93, 69, 89, and 97, what is the lowest score the student can earn on the final exam and still get an A in the course?

(93 + 69 + 89 + 97 + 2x ) / 6 = 90

348 + 2x = 90 * 6

Therefore x = 96

Student needs a lowest grade of 96 to get at least 90 average in all subjects

Calculating simple list price

A wholesaler wants to establish a list price for an item so that his selling price gives a trade discount of 10% for the list price. If he makes a mark up of 20% of this selling price and if his cost is $160 what list price should be established.

Selling price = list price - list price * 10%

Cost = 160

Also selling price = 160 + 160 * 20%
SP = 192

So we can solve the first eq:

Sp = Lp - Lp * 10/100

Sp = Lp ( 1 - 1/10)

192 = Lp ( 9/10)

Lp = 1920/9 = 213.333
